Up close at the Maeklong Railway Market.

This jam packed market is full of both locals doing their every day shopping and a gazillion tourists seeing how close they can get to the approaching train.

Vendors get a 5 minute warning toot that the train is approaching and hastily drag their wares back behind the red line, then pull back their awnings in as the train comes into view. The shoppers also try to squeeze themselves behind the line, while still maintaining a view.

Luckily the approach is slow and the announced warnings frequent and come in multiple languages, as the daredevil instagram posters stay on the tracks as long as possible, cameras poised.

It’s light hearted and fun, and within a few moments of the train’s departure business is back to normal.

We were lucky enough to witness this spectacle twice and love the whole crazy atmosphere.

A crazy vendor larking around.
Lots of tourist on the train too enjoying the spectacle.

Track ready for the train’s approach
Business as normal.
